Svenska akademiens ordbok skriver bland annat så här om kol:
1) fast, men poröst o. pulvriserbart, till färgen i avsvalnat tillstånd svart stycke av brännbart material som genomgått ofullständig förbränning (o. alltså icke bränts till aska); äv. om dylikt styckw som ännu brinner l. glöder (glödande kol)
3) kem. grundämne som i rent tillstånd uppträder ss. diamant o. grafit o. i bundet tillstånd i en mängd ämnen, utgörande huvudbeståndsdelen i trä. o. stenkol samt (bundet vid väte o. syre o. flera andra grundämnen) i alla organiska ämnen.
Om diamant skriver SAOB:
1) benämning på en mycket hård, genomskinligt vattenklar l. färgad (i rödt, grönt l. blått – i mindre värdefulla varieteter i gult, brunt l. svart), i sht efter slipning o. polering starkt glänsande, ytterst dyrbar ädelsten bestående af i kristallformer af det reguljära systemet, vanl. oktaedrar, kristalliseradt rent kol.
